Living on your own

Rooms in Utrecht

A really fun way to experience your student time in Utrecht is by living in the city! Cycling to college, having drinks in town with fellow students after college, two university libraries full of study materials and study places, roommates, study parties, there are a lot of advantages to finding a room in Utrecht. This can sometimes be tricky though, which is why we have the following tips:

  • Register as soon as possible for the student housing organisation in Utrecht, SSH. This foundation is reliable, has a lot on offer in both student complexes and townhouses and is often the cheapest. It works on a waitingtime, so sign up as soon as you know you will be studying in Utrecht. For more independent living spaces, you can also pre-register at Woningnet.
  • Many students also find rooms with private landlords, through commercial websites or social media. This also works well, but it is a matter of starting your search in time. Other than that, you mainly need to be lucky, but many have preceded you in finding a beautiful place to live in Utrecht and its surroundings through these avenues.
  • Hospiteren is usually the way to get the room you want in Utrecht. Hospiteren basically means applying for a living space. Just be yourself on 'hospiteer evenings' and don't be sad if you don't make it; as we know, in Utrecht demand often exceeds supply.
  • Check that you are not paying too much rent via normalhuur.co.uk. Especially private landlords are notorious for charging too much money in the face of poor conditions, so be critical when looking for a room.
