In 1941, a group of musicology students, including Hélène Nolthenius (1920-2000) and Nancy van der Elst (1919-2017), decided to found a fraternity. They named it after the monk Pseudo-Hucbald of St. Amand (c. 850-930, unfortunately Mrs. van der Elst could not tell us what the meaning of that ‘Pseudo’ was, too), who produced some of the earliest known music-theoretical writings from the Low Countries, and therefore was found to be a suitable namesake for the association.
During the first years, the association was active underground, since the German occupier had imposed a ban on associations that were not affiliated with the NSB. At fixed times, members met at other members’ homes to discuss music history (Nancy van der Elst described them as “conferences”), to compose, or to make music together. In the first years, the association made a permanent contribution to the Utrecht Bach Cantata service, established by Hans Brandts Buys, who was later the founder of the Utrecht Student Choir and Orchestra (USKO) and the Leidsche Collegium Musicum in Leiden.
Na college zongen de studenten onderling polyfonie en gregoriaans en eens in de maand werden er dispuutbijeenkomsten georganiseerd. De studenten hadden een taakverdeling voor het lezen van onder andere de nieuwste boeken en artikelen en bespraken deze met elkaar. Hélène Nolthenius schreef de tekst voor een officieel Hucbaldmotet dat door Nancy van der Elst van muziek werd voorzien. De cantus firmus bestond uit het solmisatiemotief ut-la-sol-mi-la-ut-si-la (“Hucbald Gloria Musica”). Deze staat onderaan embed.
In 2016 vierde de vereniging haar vijftiende lustrum. In dit jaar schreven twee Hucbald-prominenten, Rhodan ten Kleij en Tijsjoris Groot, een nieuw lied voor de vereniging (“De Entiteit”). Eerdere lustrumliederen werden geschreven door Leo Samama. Voor het tiende lustrum maakte hij een bewerking van Mahlers eerste symfonie.
In de loop der jaren heeft Studievereniging Hucbald zich ontwikkeld tot een moderne studievereniging. Vandaag de dag houdt Studievereniging Hucbald zich bezig met het organiseren van o.a. open podia, lezingen, een bedrijvendag, een symposium, concertbezoeken, feesten, borrels, een studiereis, een familiedag, excursies, introducties, workshops en een herdenkingsconcert. Ook publiceert de vereniging een digitale nieuwsbrief en verzorgt Studievereniging Hucbald de boekverkoop voor muziekwetenschapstudenten. Hucbald is ‘zusje’ van A-Eskwadraat (wiskunde, natuurkunde en informatica), Alias (taal- en cultuurstudies) en FUF (wijsbegeerte).
