3 for the price of 1! This time, we’re looking at Anything Could Be Here, a north-eastern US (Brooklyn – Philadelphia)  band / collaborative project consisting of Ryan Leahan, patchymate and abbot. All alumni of the hyperpop scene, you could describe their style as a rough-around-the-edges approach to pop music – although that description doesn’t do complete justice to the more experimental facets of their sound. You can expect a lot of guitar-driven songs, but not without a heavy amount of production and a fair bit of electronica involved.

I was first introduced to the collective pretty recently – mostly through patchymate. It was through her announcement of ACBH’s debut album, Greatest Movie Never Filmed, that I even learned of the band, and I must say it is on constant repeat for me for a while now. Just the structure of the project alone is already pretty unique, with (of six tracks total) the two middle tracks being reprises (or alternate versions – whatever you want to call it) of the first two. It really accentuates the album as a complete listening experience rather than just a tracklist.

Stylistically, the album is also quite varied, and frankly, all over the place. In a good way. The album starts out uptempo with something that isn’t quite rock, but wouldn’t feel out of place in a rock playlist. A couple songs later, it’s straight hiphop. Combinations that traditionally shouldn’t work, somehow manage to work in this album and with this production style that naturally blends genres.

The solo work of these three is also worth checking out. It’s in a similar vein to ACBH – also very much forward-thinking and pop that isn’t really just pop. I also have to shoutout this year’s solo album Reality by patchymate specifically, she’s a master at blending experimental, glitchy ambience with the most catchy hooks.

Yeah, go listen to Anything Could Be Here. ‘Greatest Movie Never Filmed’ (their debut album) is also just 18 minutes, so there’s no reason not to listen. If you’re at all interested in guitar-heavy pop, experimental but still accessible music, or the diaspora of genres that originated from hyperpop, this is the perfect music for you to check out.
